New Haarlem pays homage both to the thriving Upper-Upper West metro-center that’s taking shape in the 21st century, and to the elegant neighborhood of mansions and elegant row houses that formed the backdrop for the swank, tumult, and high-kicking revelry of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, when those legendary Art Deco music venues, Small’s Paradise, the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club, and the Lenox Lounge, appeared and nurtured the genius of artists like Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Billie Holiday, who changed the world of music.
